CHINA-INI, A DREAM COMING TRUE

2008年，最多2009年，一座现代化，具有独特脑型结构的大厦将耸立在长椿街上。她以无以伦比的雄伟和壮观，无可争议地成为北京市的标志性建筑。她以最现代的计算机全自动化控制系统管理着整个大楼的水，电，气，空调和各种通讯，呼叫，信息传送。她集中了世界上最好的影像诊断设备，手术和监护仪器。她以舒适的住院条件，优美的周围环境，天使般的服务，让病人倍觉安全放心。最为引人注目的是这里有世界一流神经外科专家组成的团队，可以让我们的病人在国内就享受到世界上最好的医疗服务。

The year 2008 or 2009 at most will witness a modern uniquely brain-shaped glass building standing on Changchun Street by the side of Xuanwu Hospital. With distinctive architectural concept and overshadowing grandness, it will undoubtedly become another landmark in the fast changing city of Beijing. It will present itself to the public with automated management system running the supply of water, power and oxygen, air conditioning, communication facilities, paging and info-networking on the intranet. It will equip itself with the world state-of-the-art imaging diagnostic machinery and surgical and monitoring instrument. It will also offer itself to the patients with a beautiful environment and angel-like service making them feel safe and released. Most eye-catching is that here will gather a contingent of top-class neurosurgeons from all over the world so that our patients could enjoy the best possible medical service in the world while staying at home.

这座奇特的建筑是怎样落户北京的？其中有一段传奇的故事。下面我们跟随历史镜头的回放，来重演这段传说：

How could such a strange building be located in Beijing? There is a long tale. Let’s look back on it following a replay of the past:

SAMII教授和凌锋1982年初会与法国里昂

1982年，凌锋应法国巴黎第七大学医学院院长Houdart教授的邀请，赴巴黎进修介入神经放射学。同年10月，国际显微外科大会在里昂召开，凌锋教授参加了大会，会上认识了Samii教授，并交换了名片。

Ms. Ling Feng had advanced studies on interventional neuroradiology in Paris at the invitation of Prof. Houdart, Principal of 7th University of Paris, France in 1982. In October the same year, Ling attended the International Conference of World Microsurgery in Leon where she met Prof. Samii and exchanged name cards.

SAMII教授组织世界第一次全球电话会议

1984年，Samii教授组织第一次全球电话会议，共有24个国家和地区参加。要在中国找一个组织者和主持人，Samii教授想起凌锋。他给凌锋寄来《听神经瘤》的手术录像带，请段国升教授组织中国90名神外专家在北京长途电话局的会议厅里，参加了这场当时非常独特和新鲜的会议。大家在世界各地的同一时间观看录像带，Samii教授同时讲解。然后全世界的医生一起讨论。这场活动让中国医生认识了Samii教授的精湛的手术技巧，Samii教授也了解了凌锋的组织能力。

Prof. Samii Organized the First Global Teleconference in the World

In 1984, Prof. Samii set to organize the first global teleconference in neurosurgery with participants from 24 countries and regions in the world. He needed a sub-organizer and local chair in China. Then he thought of Dr. Ling Feng. He wrote Ling a letter explaining his idea and request for assistance together with a tape of operation on XXXX he had performed. Ling did a good job and accomplished the mission well under seemingly impossible conditions. She invited Prof. Duan Guosheng to be the chair and organized 90 neurosurgeons to attend the conference at a meeting hall in the Beijing Long Distance Telephone Bureau. It was such a unique and fresh style of meeting that every participant from all over the world could join the discussion and share experience with Prof. Samii while viewing the tape. The Conference provided a chance for the Chinese doctors to know Prof. Samii and his beautiful surgical skills and an opportunity for Prof. Samii to acknowledge Ling’s organizing capabilities.

1985年重逢日本世界脑血管外科大会

1985年，日本仙台东北大学铃木二郎教授组织了一次世界脑血管外科大会，全球各著名教授参加，我国的王忠诚教授率二十多名中国神经外科医生参加。在此次会议上，凌锋和Samii教授老友重逢，共叙友谊，更加深了了解。

Reunion at a World Conference in Japan 1985

Prof. Suzuki of the Northeast University of Sendai, Japan organized a world symposium on cerebrovascular surgery in 1985 and many famous experts from the world came to attend. Prof. C. C. Wang led more than 20 Chinese neurosurgeons to participate in the meeting. Ling Feng, one of the Chinese participants, had a happy reunion with her old friend Prof. Samii and deepened their friendship and mutual understanding, which can be seen on the smiling faces of the photo below.

1986年SAMII教授举办第一次世界颅底大会

1980年SAMII教授组办了国际颅底外科学会并于1986年举办了一次非常重要的国际颅底外科大会，邀请凌锋参加，并作了大会发言。凌锋对SAMII教授的医院和手术叹为观止。

The First World Skull Base Neurosurgery Conference in 1986

Prof. Samii has founded the International Skull Base Study Group in 1980 and held a very important International Skull Base Conference in 1986. He invited Prof. Ling to give a talk at the meeting. Ling made a visit to his hospital and admired his surgical facilities and skills. The photo below shows Ling with Samii at his office.

1986年SAMII第一次对华卫星实时手术演示

1986年SAMII教授第一次在中国长城饭店做听神经瘤的实时手术演示。当时直接对话的是凌锋，张纪，周定标，刘树山，观看演示的有全国100多名神经外科医生。

Real Time Satellite Surgical Demonstration to China in 1986

In 1986, Prof. Samii gave his first real time satellite surgical demonstration on 听神经瘤to China at the Great Wall Hotel. More than 100 Chinese neurosurgeons viewed the operation. Dr. Ling was one of the moderators assisting the questions and answers between Prof. Samii and her Chinese colleagues.

1987年SAMII访问中国

1987年，应中国人民解放军总医院神经外科主任段国升教授的邀请，SAMII教授和PHILIPPON教授及日本的白马明教授第一次访问中国，并在301医院组织了学习班和讲座。这是Samii教授第一次访华，但中国神经外科医生对他并不陌生，前次的电话会议和卫星会议已经给中国医生非常深的印象。他的报告受到与会者的热烈欢迎。

Prof. Samii’s First Visit to China in 1987

At the invitation of Prof. Duan Guosheng, Chief of the Neurosurgical Department of the General Hospital, PLA, Prof. Samii paid a visit to China with Prof. Philippon and Japanese Prof. XXX and delivered talks to study course and seminar in the Hospital. Though it was his first visit to China, the Chinese neurosurgeons were not unfamiliar with him. His global teleconference and satellite conference left deep impression on the Chinese doctors who warmly applauded his lectures.

汉诺威-INI揭幕式

2000年7月21日新千年汉诺威国际博览会之前，汉诺威-INI邀请全球100多位贵宾及德国政府政要参加揭幕式。我国神经外科前辈王忠诚院士也参加了。

Hanover-INI Inauguration

On the eve of the New Millennium International Expo’2000 held in Hanover, Prof. Samii invited over 100 VIP guests from the world and high-ranking officials from the German government to attend Hanover-INI Inauguration Ceremony. Prof. C.C. Wang from China was among the guests.

凌锋顺访德国

2001年1月凌锋带团参加VAL D’ISERE 会议后，组织栾文忠、冷冰、蔺玉昌、李化伟等6人参观汉诺威INI。其间与SAMII教授商量如何建立中德教育基金会之事。后定为有凌锋给西门子首席执行官VON PIRRERE 写信，要求其出资10万美金。VON PIRRERE立即回信落实。

In January 2001, Prof. Ling led a 6-person Chinese delegation to visit Hanover-INI after the WFITN annual Val d’Isere meeting. She discussed with Prof. Samii the way to establish a Sino-German Education Foundation. As they agreed, Ling wrote to Mr. Von Firrere, the CEO of Siemens raising the request and received a prompt reply from him promising to set up a US$100,000 foundation.

2002年9月陈凌得到第一个机会赴德国INI进修颅底外科。2003年初，陈凌给凌锋写信透露SAMII教授征求陈凌的意见是否愿意在中国复制一个INI？北京还是上海？我们当即表示“在北京” ！接着安排2003年4月在北京举办一届颅底学习班并到处选址，包括大兴，亦庄开发区，最终定在宣武医院南边。

Mr. Chen Ling Studied in Germany

Mr. Chen Ling, one of Prof. Ling Feng’s post-doctors got the first offer and studied skull base surgery in Hanover-INI from September 2002. He learnt Prof. Samii’s intention to copy an INI to China but wondering whether should it be in Beijing or Shanghai. Chen passed the message to Prof. Ling and they at once assured Samii that Beijing was the best choice. They also decided to hold the first Study Course on Skull Base Surgery in Beijing April 2003. Then Ling Feng and her colleagues went around Beijing to find a suitable site for China-INI. Finally a location by the southern side of Xuanwu Hospital was agreed on.

凌锋到法国签合约

2003年4-5月的SARS使学习班未能成行。但在此期间，张建院长于北京大成公司的戴总多次谈判，晓之以理，动之以情，感动了戴总，割让了大成公司原先准备开发的土地共56亩。SARS一结束，凌锋即飞法国SAMII教授的休假地，受张建院长委托，与SAMII教授签订合作意向书。

SARS interrupted the Study Course on Skull Base Surgery scheduled in April 2003. Meanwhile, Mr. Zhang Jian, Director of Wuanwu Hospital, persuaded Mr. Dai, CEO of Da Cheng Co. Ltd., to transfer a piece a land of 9.3 ache nearby to Xuanwu Hospital for the future China-INI. Right after SARS ended, entrusted by Director Zhang, Prof. Ling flew to France where Prof. Samii was having a vocation with his wife and signed a Letter of Intention.

2004年5月，SAMII教授在去上海参加WFNS继续教育学习班前，路过北京时受到牛有成副市长的接见，金大鹏局长陪同，并决定7月访问德国。

In May 2004, on his way to Shanghai for a continued education study course, Prof. Samii came to Beijing and met with Mr. Niu Youcheng, the Deputy Mayor of Beijing. Mr. Jin Dapeng, Director of the Health Bureau was present and decided to visit Germany in July.

Mr. Jin on behalf of the Beijing Government signed the Cooperation Agreement with Prof. Samii on 21st July 2004 incidentally the same date when Hanover-INI was inaugurated 4 years ago. What a good-omen coincidence! It looked as if history was in favor of our collaboration.

2004年11月被SARS耽搁了一年的学习班终于开始了。SAMII教授的一家-夫人，儿子夫妇，女儿一家三口以及RABISHONG, OI, CHOUX, 麻醉师，护士，检测师一行十几人来到北京，不仅讲学，还在大学讲课，在医院做手术。在学习班的开幕式上，金局长亲自宣布，SAMII教授将是第一个在华获得永久行医执照的外国医生。张建院长正式任命他为CHINA-INI的所长，首都医科大学校长授予SAMII教授名誉教授的证书。

In November 2004, the Study Course that had been postponed due to SARS epidemic, was finally convened in Beijing. Prof. Samii brought his whole family including his wife, his son and daughter-in-law, his daughter and son-in-law with their little boy together with RABISHONGOI, CHOUX, an anesthetist, a nurse and a test superintendent. They gave lectures and performed demonstrations. At the Opening Ceremony, Mr. Jin Dapeng granted Prof. Samii a permanent license to perform medical service, hence becoming the first foreign doctor with such a life-long license in China. Mr. Zhang Jian, Director of Xuanwu Hospital invited him to be the director of China-INI and the Principal of the Capital University of Medical Sciences conferred him Honorary Professor.
